Here are the top 100 one-hit wonders of the ’80s based on Billboard’s Top 40 chart peak. We’ve excluded people who had one solo hit but a lot of hits with a band (Bill Medley, Philip Bailey, Ric Ocasek, etc.), but otherwise, we just used the rule that if they had just one Top 40 hit, they were a one-hit wonder.
A couple of interesting notes: “Funkytown” is shared by two different one-hit wonders (albeit with different spellings); and there’s an interesting juxtaposition of two songs named after the bands near the end of the list. I also find the juxtaposition of Buckner & Garcia and The Grateful Dead amusing. M and The Buggles should probably be given ‘honorable mention’ as well.
